Hunting Crimes Hank in the autumn rolled up in northern Sweden has been called the largest. Five men were charged with killing four bears, three lynx and wolverines under torture-like shapes. In Luleå District Court was shown a film that one of the perpetrators recorded. A lynx snarats and hoisted up a tree fighting for his life.

The brutality made headlines. But Hank also illustrated the difficulty of punishing illegal hunting. The inquiry was great, expensive and the evidence weighed heavily on wiretapping.

- Hunting Violation occurs in the forest and no plaintiffs. The investigations are based on our use of secret surveillance, otherwise we never ate there. There is a strong culture of silence around this type of crime, says environmental prosecutor Åse Schoultz.

One issue which partly drowned in the commotion surrounding the trial were the subject. Why were killed predators? And why so elaborate cruel hunting methods?

None of the condemned men would be interviewed.
